October 31- November 4

10/30/2011

Monday will be a regular school day.  Students are welcome to dress in orange and black.

In Reading we have been working on a strategy called 'connecting'.  Last week students chose a book that they will present to the class this week to demonstrate this skill.  Primary books lend themselves nicely to this activity.

Playing dice games or cards games is a great way to build math skills.  Students have now been introduced to the  TenMarks math site and can access this from home for extra practice.

Mrs. Nicklas is our contact teacher for the salmonid program.  She tells me that eggs will be delivered over the next two weeks starting on Tuesday.  If we are lucky enough to get a specific date, it will be in the Agenda.  It is a DO NOT MISS (if possible) activity for students.  It is an amazing experience to see the eggs harvested from the live female and fertilized by the live male.

On Thursday we will be video conferencing with Juniper Ridge to reveal each other's Monsters!

October 24-28

10/21/2011

There will not be a formal reportcard.  Over the next couple of weeks I will send home an update.  Please write a note in the Agenda if you would like to set up a meeting to discuss your child's progress.

Most students are remembering to bring their Agenda to school every day.  It is a very important part of communication.  Students are expected to show it to parents and get a signature which just means that you have seen it.  If your child does not complete daily work, it is photocopied and expected to be completed and returned the next day.  In general, there is no formal homework.  From time to time there may be a math worksheet or information about a project. However, all students are encouraged to read at least twenty minutes daily.  Daily Math practice is also strongly encouraged.

On Tuesday we will be working with our buddies in Mrs. Stokes class and helping them carve their pumpkins.  If you bring cutting tools please make sure that your name is on them.

Friday is our intermediate Halloween Dance.  Admission is $2.00.  There will be a concession with chips, juice, and water for $1.00.  Costumes are fine just make sure that you do not wear a mask because we need to be able to see your face.  All week we will be collecting non-parishable food items for the Food Bank.

Last week students should have brought home their math unit test (Patterns & Algebra) to be signed and returned to school.  We have started Number Sense.  It is a huge unit with many parts.  I will try to do more frequent quizzes/tests.  Right now we are doing place value.  Your child will have a password for a new site called TenMarks. It is excellent practice and there are tutorials if they have any difficulty. They will record the password in the front of their Agendas. Their password for Spelling City should be there already.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
