*Tuesday, February 21st* Gymnastics payment due.  If you require more time please let me know in your child's Agenda.

*Wednesday, February 22nd*  Harper Mountain.  This is our last day for skiing/snowboarding.  I want to thank parents very much for supporting this life long sport.  Even if your child does not pick it up again until later in life, they will have this important foundation.

*Friday February 24th*  This is a professional development day, therefore the school is closed.

*Science Fair*  There are still a few groups that need to do their experiments.  Therefore I am extending week 2.  Here is a reminder of the schedule outline.
Week 1- choose a question
Week 2- gather the materials, do the experiment, record results, observations
Week 3- write up all of the components
Week 4- using a display board, put the project together

MATH
On Tuesday we will have our final test for Number Sense.  It has been a very long unit.  The test will be on rounding to the tens, hundreds, and thousands, as well as counting coins.  Many of our practice sheets have gone home.  To prepare students can do a quick review of the sheets.

SCIENCE
This is week 2 of preparation for Science Fair.  Students are expected to bring to school the materials they need for the experiment.  It is expected that students will have a photo record of the experiment.  I realize that some families may not be comfortable sending a camera to school.  I do have a camera as a back up.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Last week we completed some very cool Valentine's projects.  We will participate in the Heritage Stamp contest this week.

MATH
Students should be practicing their times tables every day for at least ten minutes.  Home support is critical in memorizing these facts.  There are many ways to make it fun!  Please help your child practice every day.

Science Fair projects are due in four weeks.  Last week was the introduction.  Through a demonstration students followed the scientific process completing a sheet which includes of all the aspects they will be responsible for when they do their project.
This week, students must choose a project that meets the criteria of an experiment.

*FSA TESTING*  This week and early into next week there will be FSA testing.
*Harper Mountain*  Next Wednesday will be our first lesson.  We need at least one parent volunteer to transport equipment.  Please let me know if you plan on attending and if you plan to ski/snowboard.

SCIENCE FAIR
Our next science unit is science fair projects.  This takes 4-5 weeks and is done in class time (for the most part).  Although there are many ways to do projects (studies, replications, etc.) we are doing experiments following the scientific method.  That is, students need to come up with: a question, hypothesis, materials needed, procedure, control, independent variable (s), results/observations, conclusion.  It is possible that some of the projects may be chosen to go on to the district level.  Judges look for originality.  Simple projects that are designed to answer a question that the student has thought about are highly desirable.

LANGUAGE ARTS
This week we will complete our novel study and end by making a plot line.  This is a new strategy for students to summarize a book and demonstrate their understand of the characters and events.

MATH
We will continue learning more about rounding numbers and move into estimating.

Students are really enjoying the novel.  We will begin Chapter 7 this week.  The activities include comprehension questions in a variety of formats as well as vocabulary development and word study (synonyms, contractions, etc.).

We are beginning to focus on First Nations people across Canada.  We are looking at how natural resources are related to the environment and how those resources help us meet our basic needs.
We will also learn about the characteristics of tradition aboriginal cultures.

We are nearly finished with multiplication for now.  Please keep practicing times tables every day!
Mrs. Berndt has proposed a challenge to all classes to improve their skills.
About mid week, we will begin rounding using the number line.  I will photocopy some pages to go home.

LANGUAGE ARTS
We are on our way with the novel study.  Some students have read this story before so it makes predicting a bit tricky.  However, it is a very well written book and students enjoy it.

SCIENCE
Mrs. Nicklaus dropped by to check on the health of our salmon.  It seems that I was a little early with the water exchanges.  Those will begin within the next two weeks.  Our water is clean, and our fish are healthy!

We had a few interuptions last week so we will continue with looking for information on 'Big Questions' and 'Small Questions'.

LANGUAGE ARTS
We are starting a novel study.  We are doing this together as a group.  Students will be working on character studies, word studies, and comprehension skills.
SCIENCE
We are moving along with the cycle of life.  Our salmon eggs have gone from: fertilized eggs, to eyed eggs, to alevin.  Right now they are self sufficient and are nourished by their yolk sac.  This week begins the chore of weekly water exchanges.
MATH
We are continuing to learn about multiplication in terms of arrays (rows and columns) and repeated addition.  Daily practice is strongly recommended.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Tomorrow a home project is due.  Students should have three examples each of food, shelter, and clothing.  A small sketch and short explanation are required.
We will begin looking at key words to research answers to BIG QUESTIONS and SMALL QUESTIONS and find information in the text.
YPC
This Thursday is our second Young People's Concert.  We will be watching a performance by BUZZ BRASS.  They will take us on a journey to explain the origins of contemporary music.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
It is time to begin collect fees for Harper Mountain.  Please send those to school as soon as possible.
I would also like to get a count of how many parents plan on joining us.

READING
We will begin working on our last Reading Power strategy, INFER.  This is perhaps the most difficult one for students to understand.  It involves high order thinking skills.  Using clues from the text, they need to figure out for themselves what the author did not write, and 'infer'.

MATH
We will continue with concepts in number sense.  Students should practice their times tables daily at home.  It is recommended that they lay out columns and rows.  You can use anything such as: dried beans, corn, buttons, etc.  There are many ways to practice times tables.  Students really like the websites with games.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We are learning about basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter.  A small home project is coming up.

SCIENCE
Our salmon have reached a new stage.  One hundred percent of our egg

HARPER MOUNTAIN
It seems that I have caused some confusion around our Ski/Snowboard lessons.  I apologize for any misunderstandings.  The organization around this is a large under taking.  It was my intention to give families lots of notice to plan for the expense.  For example, families (or Santa) may have wanted to make gifts of clothing or equipment.  With regard to the latter, it is never too late to change your status of being a renter of equipment to that of having your own equipment.  With regard to the dates, I did not have a choice, those dates were assigned to me.  Many schools have long standing dates, year after year.  Hopefully, that will become true for Parkcrest as well and will gets dates closer together in the future.  Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns regarding this or any other matter.
I have made a mistake about when school resumes.  It reopens on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

READING
This week we will finish up with the Reading Power strategy of visualizing.

MATH
We are continuing to work our way through numeration.  Daily practice of times tables is recommended.   This week we are looking at multiplication in terms of repeated addition.

December 6-9 12/05/2011

*Christmas performance with our Kindergarten buddies for families: Friday, December 9th, 8:45-9:00 in the gym*
*SKIING/SNOWBOARDING* at Harper Mountain- Your child will bring home the package with information.  Please read each page carefully.  You need to classify your child as a 'type' for safety purposes.  Your child's height (cm), weight (kg), and shoe size need to be included for rental equipment.  Please sign and return the last two pages by Friday December 9th.  Payment is not due until the first week of January.

Tuesday, December 6th- We will be making Bannock with our first nations support worker, Mrs. Boyer.

Students have also been learning and practicing the ancient skill of weaving.

In Math this week we will begin by learning about key words such as 'difference' and 'total'.  We will quickly move into word problems.  We will begin multiplication soon.  There are many great websites to practice times tables.  Students should be able to memorize the facts with 10 minutes practice per day.  They should begin with the two times tables and know them forward and backward.  For example: 2x1=2, 1x2=2, 2x2=4, 2x3=6, 3x2=6, etc.
