*Friday is an Inservice Day (no school for students)* LANGUAGE ARTS This week we will finish up our unit on poetry. Students will meet twice this week with Mrs. Gorman and continue reading and taking notes on their animal research. MATH This week we will begin a unit on Fractions. Students will learn to name fractions and identify equal parts of a set. SOCIAL STUDIES This week we will finish off our study of the early European exploration of Canada. SCIENCE We will begin our final unit on the biodiversity of living things. Specifically, we will be looking at Healthy Habitats. May 7-11 05/06/2012
*FINE ARTS* Our projects will be coming home this Friday. Please send a water proof bag for carrying it home. A grocery bag would be perfect! *Thursday, May 10th, TRACK AND FIELD all day* *SALMON RELEASE FIELD TRIP, May 22nd* A permission slip for our trip to Pine Park will come home Monday. Please return it by Friday. We will be taking a school bus. The cost is $2.00. We will leave at 8:30 and return at 12:00. It will be a rain or shine activity. Close toed shoes are mandatory (no flip flops). Students will need a snack and water. We also need someone to transport the fish that day. It requires some strength to lift a full five gallon bucket. * ANIMAL MYSTERY QUEST* Students will be participating in a video conference known as an 'Animal Mystery Quest'. With a partner they will be researching and collecting notes on a Canadian animal. Once they have gathered information on: appearance, habitat, food, enemies, adaptations, and special characteristics, they will provide clues to another class. That class will try and guess what the animal is. In turn, they will have done the same thing and we will guess what their animals are. MATH Monday we will have a practice test on division. The test is set up for Tuesday but we may need an extra day and have the test on Wednesday. LANGUAGE ARTS We are continuing with our poetry unit. Students are learning to recognize and write specific forms. They are having a lot of fun with the play on words and making up some silly rhymes. April 30-May 4 04/29/2012
*Track and Field Practice* Monday, Wednesday, Friday These practices are our P.E. class. Each student is expected to get changed into proper gym strip. Students are evaluated on participation, performance, and preparedness. Many students are wearing deodorant. As much as possible, we ask that children choose scent free products due to the sensitivity of those with allergies. *Transit Presentation Thursday* The city of Kamloops will be stopping by on Thursday with an exciting presentation and promotion o LANGUAGE ARTS This week we will begin a unit on poetry. Students will be learning about the rhythm, rhyme, and nine different forms. We will be reading and writing and collecting poetry. SOCIAL STUDIES We will continue looking at the reasons explorers came to North America. We will also be doing a comparison between European cultures and Aboriginal cultures. MATH Most students are beginning to grasp the concept of division. So much of division is grounded in a good understanding of the times tables. We will complete our unit this week. Last Friday we began a fine arts project with our Kindergarten buddies. It will continue throughout this week and into next week. Shhh....(it is for a special occasion)! *This Thursday is 'Wear Your Favourite Jersey Day*! It is also Jeans Day (a fundraiser for BC Children's Hopital). *Track and Field* Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday. Please have proper gym strip. The Parkcrest Track Meet will be on Thursday, May 10th. *YPC* This Thursday is our last Young People's Concert. HACE On Tuesday and Thursday we will have our final lessons with Mrs. Gorman on Passport to the Internet. SOCIAL STUDIES Students worked very hard on their personal timelines. They are posted on the bulletin board outside our classroom. Students all over the school are stopping to read them! MATHEMATICS We are moving more slower than expected with division. It is critical that students know their times tables in order to grasp this concept. That requires daily practice at home. This week we will be dividing two digits by one digit. *P.E.* This week we will begin our Track & Field rotations. It will take place outside on the afternoons of: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Students needs to have full gym strip. HACE: INTERNET SAFETY This week we will begin a program called, 'Passport to the Intenet'. We will be doing this unit with our librarian, Mrs. Gorman. The program is an interactive tutorial that helps students develop critical thinking skills that they need to apply to their online experiences. They will learn about popular online tools and Web sites in a secure and ethical manner. SOCIAL STUDIES Students have been learning how to effectively take notes using key words. Presently they are gathering information about explorers. SCIENCE The salmon are developing nicely and are a great source pleasure in the classroom. Many students stop to observe them daily and can see their changes. Our release date has not yet been set but it will be in the third or fourth week of May. MATH This week we will be practicing mental math strategies as well as learning long division (dividing two digits by one digit) April 10-13 04/09/2012
P.E. We completed a short unit on dance. Students got into groups and performed for each other. They were evaluated on: form, dance moves, and synchronicity. Please ensure that your child resumes the habit of having P.E. strip for Wednesdays and Fridays. SOCIAL STUDIES We ended our First Nations study by building a coastal village. Students will be presenting the story of their totem to our class. Last week students received the paper strip on which they are to build their personal time line. This is a home project and it is due Friday, April 13th. If your child requires an extension until Tuesday, April 17th, please let me know. This is the beginning of our unit on Explorers. We brainstormed a list of questions that students have. It will be a very interesting unit. MATH We have begun the new unit on division. Knowledge of multiplication facts is critical. Practice, practice, practice. Students really need to know them by heart. This week we are looking at two ways of sharing. That is, the number of sets in a number and the number that is in each set. *This Thursday is, BUNNY EARS DAY!* Last Friday we started our Psanky eggs. The last two groups will be done on Monday, April 2nd. We are fortunate to be under the patient, and expert guidance of Mrs. Floodstrom. She will be taking the eggs home to remove the wax and varnish them. We could not be doing this without her. Her time is greatly appreciated. Please send something to safely transport these raw eggs home. MATH On Monday we will have our Measurement Unit test. Tuesday we will begin a new Number Sense unit. Students will be learning the concept of division. This is one of the most challenging concepts for students. A good foundation of multiplication facts is critical. LANGUAGE ARTS Students have been learning the skill of rephrasing the question within their answer. For example, "Do you think the story is realistic? Why or why not?" Students must answer with, "Yes I think the story is realistic because..." (here they need to use an example). We have also been learning the difference between, 'to, too, and two'. SOCIAL STUDIES We will soon be studying Explorers. I like to begin this unit with personal time lines. It is an opportunity for students to share their 'life story'. I will provide the paper. Everything has been measured to fit on our bulletin board so please do not substitute the paper. Also, please be assured that all of your photos will be returned. The time line starts with your child's baby picture and a few sentences. It concludes with something recent. March 26-30 03/25/2012
*Friday, March 30th* is an early closure day. Students are dismissed at 12:30. If you want to book an appointment please contact the office. FINE ARTS This week we will begin a delicate project. Students will be learning the art of making a Ukrainian Easter Egg (Pysanky). The technique is known as a wax-resist. It involves heating bees wax and using a tool known as a 'kistka'. The dyes are very special and unique to this tradition. LANGUAGE ARTS We are reading short stories and looking at: characters, setting, and plot. We continue to work on paragraph construction, using proper grammar, capitalization and punctuation. MATHEMATICS We will continue with measurement. This week we are learning about metres, kilometres and perimeter as well as ordering measurements. SCIENCE Students worked very hard on the Science Fair projects. They enjoyed presenting them to other classes and each other. Our next science unit will be ecology. SOCIAL STUDIES We are finishing up our study of traditional first nations coastal people and their seasonal cycle. March 12-16 03/11/2012
*This Thursday is our last visit to the Kamloops Gymnastics Club. Please send your child to school dressed in gym wear (t-shirts, sweats or shorts). Please remember, no belts, zippers, or jewelry. This is the last week before spring break. Spring break will be March 19-23. School starts again on Monday, March 26th. All students would benefit from reading daily and practicing math skills over the break. SCIENCE We are in the final stage of preparing the science fair projects. If you have not sent the display board to school, please do so by Tuesday. Students have: designed an experiment; conducted the experiment; and written up all of the information. This week students will assemble all of the information on a display board and present it to other classes. SOCIAL STUDIES The Heritage Stamps turned out really well. They have been on display on our bulletin board along with the paragraphs that accompany them. They will come down on Tuesday and be entered in a contest. MATH We are working on a measurement unit. Students are learning how to estimate, draw and compare millimetre and centimetre units. LANGUAGE ARTS Students are continuing to build writing skills using the Write Traits program and Communication Skills 4. February 27- March 2 02/26/2012
*Thursday March 1 Gymnastics* We are taking the bus and will leave right after announcements. Please come to school ready. That means, no jewelry, no belts or buckles. Long hair needs to be tied back. A t-shirt and sweats is most suitable. SCIENCE We are in week 3. That means the projects will be getting typed up. We will be having extra computer time to get this accomplished. MATH This week we begin a unit on measurement. We begin by measuring and comparing things using the units of millimeters and centimeters. As always, students should spend at least 10 minutes per night practicing their times tables. LANGUAGE ARTS We have been working on punctuation, capitalization, the subject and predicate, synonyms, verb tense, and paragraph writing. |
